Erin Thole MS, RD, LD
A few facts about myself :
How did you become interested in dietetics?
My interest in dietetics began while I was a high school athlete. As a high school athlete I put in the hours of practice to play at a varsity level at an early age. However, my energy was always subpar, as was my performance. Once my high school athletic career came to a close I tried an individual sport, running. As a novice runner I read articles on how to become a runner as well as talked with personal trainers. This is when I learned the importance of healthy eating in relation to athletic performance, sustained energy, and overall well-being.
What do you enjoy most about being a dietitian?
I have always enjoyed meeting and learning about others as well as being an educator. Being a dietitian allows me to not only combine my interests and passions but allows me to build relationships with a variety of people. Feeling like I am making a healthy impact in someone’s life makes being a dietitian worth it!
Do you have any advice for others who want to be successful in the dietetics field?
Be open to opportunities and challenges. Think outside a normal job description and use your passion and interest to make a job a career. Get involved. Being involved with different committees or projects within your job as well as your community, dietetic practice groups and your local dietetic affiliate group not only provides more connections but also provides greater opportunities.
What do you enjoy most about your career?
As the Health and Wellness Program Manager for Midwest Dairy I enjoy all facets of meeting and working with a diverse group of influential leaders in the state of Iowa. I also enjoy my ability to educate future dietitians about the dietetic profession and the importance of knowing where your food comes from, including visiting dairy farms.
