A few facts about myself :
How did you become interested in dietetics?
I attribute my farming background to my interest in food and passion for sharing research-based information with the public. My 4-H food and nutrition projects were also a contributing factor. One 4-H exhibit involved making two types of cookies with different shortenings to address the low-cholesterol diet my grandma was following. This spurred my interest in food chemistry and how what we eat impacts our health and quality of life.
What do you enjoy most about being a dietitian?
Seeing the education I provide make an impact on the community my family, friends, and I live in. Two major audiences I work with are food service and childcare professionals. It is humbling to know this education impacts the safety of the food served at the restaurants we eat at and the nutritional quality of the meals served at the childcare center where my friend sends her daughter.
Do you have any advice for others who want to be successful in the dietetics field?
Identify professionals you admire, seek them out as mentors, and model their behaviors. Get involved with your district and state dietetics association as a way to network and meet mentors!
What do you enjoy most about your career?
The variety of people I interact with each day and the ever-evolving world of dietetics. There is always something new to learn which keeps me excited and on my toes.
