Kara Moss, RD, LD

A few facts about myself :

  • I am a long-time Cyclones fan and Iowa State alumna, but ever since living in Iowa City I have secretly become a Hawkeye fan as well.
  • After becoming a registered dietitian, I worked a part-time job for 6 months as a cook in a fine dining Italian restaurant where I prepared salads, appetizers and desserts.
  • I am always up for doing activities that require being active. Though I haven’t mastered most of them, I love water, snow and cross country skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, rock climbing, rappelling, swimming, biking, stand-up paddleboarding, running, and rollerblading to name a few.

How did you become interested in dietetics?
In high school I played soccer and ran cross country and I could notice a correlation between how I felt and performed and what I was eating. After that realization, I became more interested in nutrition and my love for food and cooking took off.

What do you enjoy most about being a dietitian?
What I enjoy most about being a dietitian is simply teaching people about nutrition. Seeing the joy in peoples’ faces when they come back to me and tell me how they feel better, their numbers have improved, or they lost weight is really rewarding.

Do you have any advice for others who want to be successful in the dietetics field?
Take any chance or opportunity that presents itself to get experience, whether it’s specifically related to dietetics or not. Even helping with a food drive at a church, playing bingo at a nursing home, or working in a restaurant can be tied back to dietetics in some way. Those experiences will help expand your knowledge and help you in your career.

What do you enjoy most about your career?
What I enjoy most about my career is that I can talk to and relate to anybody – because everybody eats! Being a dietitian, a lot of people like to talk to me about food, what they eat, special diets, recipes, and cooking. And I don’t mind because I like talking about it as well!
