Ann Feilmann MS, RD, LD

A few facts about myself :

  • I met my husband of 40 years at a Halloween party at Iowa State University. We have one son who was born while we were stationed in Italy.
  • For a creative outlet I work with stained glass. I learned glass work from my father and hopefully my designs show the influence of my mother, the artist.
  • I collect carrots. It started with an orange desktop and one of my favorite vegetables. It is amazing all the ways and places you find carrots!

How did you become interested in dietetics?

Actually that goes back to what we used to call Junior High. We were doing research on different careers and I was interested in health care. People suggested nursing but actually I was too scared of needles and so someone said maybe dietetics – it had the science and caring that interested me.

What do you enjoy most about being a dietitian?

I like the variability you have in using your knowledge. You can choose to work in a great variety of settings. Anything from sports to renal to nutrition research, and public programs providing nutrition. There are just so many different opportunities!

Do you have any advice for others who want to be successful in the dietetics field?

My best advice is don’t think a job may not be exactly what you want. Some of the jobs I have taken that were based on location and what was available have turned out to be some of the most beneficial. Every job I’ve had I’ve learned something and new skills with it.

What do you enjoy most about your career?

The opportunities! For a period of time – my husband is retired military, Navy – we moved quite frequently. I got to see a lot of the country and even overseas and was always able to find employment I enjoyed. I learned about different parts of the country and I learned a lot of new things! Dietetics was a field that I wasn’t restricted in. I learned so much and enjoyed and met so many fun people!
