A few facts about myself :

  • I have become passionate about searching for gemstones in tailing digs out west in Montana, Wyoming, California, and Colorado and having jewelry made from stones I find.
  • A recent hobby I have is making trivets out of ceramic tile decorated with alcohol inks and rub on tattoos.
  • I grew up afraid of dogs because they barked viciously at me when I helped my brother deliver newspapers. Now I am a dog lover and have 5 grand dogs and dog sit for a neighbor’s dog.


How did you become interested in dietetics?
My first job was working in a kitchen at St. Luke’s Medical Center in Sioux City. Of course, the dietitian were very good role models. I was interested in nursing and education. I wanted to go to college in Ames. My parents suggested being a dietitian because they had good salaries.

What do you enjoy most about being a dietitian?
I enjoy going to professional conferences and traveling around the country.  I also take great pleasure in watching the “light bulb” go off in a client’s head when I teach him a new concept.

Do you have any advice for others who want to be successful in the dietetics field?
I just got back from FNCE. It really opened my eyes when I was at Practice Group meetings and I saw how many younger dietitian were looking outside the box when looking at job options. In Iowa most dietitian work in grocery stores, hospitals, or nursing homes.  I was amazed to see the younger dietitians setting up their own businesses, working in advertising, and developing business plans.  They are very goal oriented and have defined five year goal plans.

What is your  food pleasure?
I enjoy rich ice cream such as chocolate chocolate chip, buttermilk chocolate cake, or Baskin Robbins Fudge Brownie ice cream.
