What’s next for Dee? She quickly figured out one of the prevailing challenges behind food insecurity is generational poverty and am broadening the
content of the group to work to address this. As a Jefferson County Supervisor, she is involved in several committees who provide services and resources.

During a presentation, one gentleman had an idea to fund some meals for people who are recovering from hospitalization. I connected him with the appropriate person and people who are in need are receiving meal vouchers.
After another presentation, there’s a group working on a soup kitchen/restaurant idea.
It’s amazing. Most importantly for the dietitians. When I was a IAND delegate in 2014 our focus was on food insecurity.
After that meeting, I helped start a “backpack” program which sends supplemental food on weekends to 300 students
in the Fairfield Community School District. The program is called “Carry on Bags.” Hy-Vee participates also.
